Clay, ink, yarn or silver? A short guide to picking the craft that fits how you like to spend an afternoon.

We get this question every week: which class should I start with? There is no wrong answer, but there is usually a best one for you.

If you like working with your hands

Start with ceramics. Wheel Throwing I is messy, physical and very satisfying. You will be covered in clay within ten minutes, and you will leave with two pieces to glaze.

If you like drawing

Try linocut. If you already sketch or doodle, printmaking turns your drawings into something you can print again and again.

If you want something calm

Weaving and natural dyeing are slower and quieter. They suit people who want an afternoon to switch off, with something soft and colourful at the end.

If you want to wear what you make

Silver Ring Making takes a single afternoon, and you walk out wearing a finished ring sized to fit.

“

Pick the craft you keep thinking about. Curiosity is the best teacher we have.
